Brass Handrails & Balustrades – Product Overview
Bright Balustrading offers a refined selection of brass handrails and balustrades for projects seeking timeless elegance, material authenticity, and architectural character. Known for their warm tone, natural patina, and solid feel, brass systems are often chosen for luxury interiors, high-end residential staircases, heritage buildings, boutique hotels, and art galleries.
Our brass handrails are fabricated from premium architectural-grade brass and are available in a variety of profiles including flat bar, hollow tube, solid rod, and custom-formed curved sections to suit both contemporary and classical design intent.
In addition to polished finishes, we also offer patinated brass handrails, where a chemical or natural ageing process is applied to give the handrail a darker, aged appearance — enhancing its aesthetic richness and character over time.
Brass Handrail Types Offered
- Flat Bar Brass Handrails
A minimalist, geometric form ideal for wall-mounted rails or balustrade tops. Offers a contemporary feel with clean edges and a solid, tactile surface. - Hollow Tube Brass Handrails
A lighter-weight option that maintains the premium brass aesthetic while offering easier integration with concealed fixings or LED lighting systems. - Solid Rod Brass balustrade/baluster infills
- Curved Brass Handrails
Custom-rolled or bent to follow the radius of curved staircases, balconies, or ramps. Offers continuous, seamless support and adds sophistication to architectural circulation spaces.
All brass handrails can be wall-mounted, post-mounted, or integrated with glass. Custom matching brass brackets, end caps, coverplates and fixings are available for a cohesive finish.
Patina Finish Services
In addition to mirror-polished or satin-brushed finishes, Bright Balustrading offers:
- Natural patina finish: Over time, brass oxidises naturally to form a warm, aged look with hues of bronze, gold, or verdigris (depending on environment and exposure).
- Accelerated patina service: We offer patinated handrails using techniques to replicate the natural aged appearance for a rustic or antique finish at the time of installation.
Clear lacquering or beeswax sealing can be applied optionally to retain the finish and slow down oxidation.
Compliance & Standards
While brass handrails are often selected for design-driven applications, they are also fabricated and installed in accordance with:
- NCC/BCA 2022 – Compliance for barriers, balustrades, and stair handrails
- AS 1428.1:2021 – Design for Access and Mobility (if used in public access routes or DDA pathways)
- AS/NZS 1170 series – Structural Design Actions
- AS1657 – Where applied in stairways, landings, or access platforms
- AS/NZS 2312.2 – Durability and environmental performance (material-specific considerations for brass in coastal or internal environments)
Performance
Brass handrails from Bright Balustrading offer a blend of visual and structural performance:
- Handrail heights: Installed to suit BCA and AS1428.1 as required (typically 865–1000mm above nosing or ramp surface)
- Solid mechanical fixings: Designed to accommodate commercial use and comply with required loadings (up to 0.5–0.6kN/m)
- Material longevity: Brass is inherently corrosion-resistant and suited for indoor or covered outdoor use
- Low maintenance options: Patinated finishes and sealed surfaces reduce cleaning requirements and show wear attractively over time
- Design flexibility: Brass can be shaped, rolled, notched, and combined with other materials like timber, glass, and stone for bespoke detailing
Bright Balustrading’s brass handrail and balustrade range is a celebration of craftsmanship, heritage, and timeless design. Whether polished to a shine or aged with character, our brass systems deliver a statement of quality and warmth that will elevate any architectural space.
