Disability Access Ramp Handrails – Product Overview
Bright Balustrading supplies and installs a specialised range of disability access ramp handrails and barrier systems designed to support safe, code-compliant movement for individuals with mobility challenges. Our systems are engineered for use in public buildings, healthcare facilities, aged care centres, and NDIS-approved home modification projects.
All handrails and kerb rail systems are manufactured using durable, non-corrosive materials such as stainless steel and are fabricated to comply with current Australian accessibility and safety regulations.
These handrail systems not only ensure safety and stability for users of wheelchairs, walking aids, and prams, but also support dignified and independent access for people with disabilities across all environments.
Disability Ramp Handrail Options
- Posts with Kerb Rail
A two-rail system comprising upper handrail and lower kerb rail (or “kick rail”), typically mounted on robust vertical posts. The kerb rail prevents wheelchair footrests and mobility aids from slipping off the edge of ramps or walkways. This is the standard requirement for most public and aged care installations. - Disability Ramp Balustrade with Handrail, Posts, & Kerb Rail – with Wire or Baluster Infills
A combined handrail and balustrade system featuring an upper handrail, a continuous kerb rail, and compliant infill panels using either stainless steel wires or vertical balusters. This design is ideal where fall protection is also required — such as elevated ramps or ramps alongside retaining walls.
Both configurations are available in straight and ramped profiles, with surface-mounted or core-drilled post options to suit concrete, timber, or tiled substrates.
Compliance & Standards
All disability access handrail systems are designed and fabricated in accordance with the following codes and standards:
- National Construction Code (NCC/BCA 2022)
- AS1428.1:2021 – Design for Access and Mobility (primary standard for accessible paths of travel, handrail height, clearance, profile, and continuous gripping surface)
- AS/NZS 1170.0, 1170.1, 1170.2 – Structural Design Actions
- NDIS Home Modifications Design Guidelines – For residential installations supported by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), ensuring suitability for funded accessibility upgrades
All systems also conform to local government and disability access consultant requirements where applicable.
Performance
Our disability ramp handrail systems are engineered to deliver the following performance outcomes:
- Handrail height between 865–1000mm above the nosing or ramp surface
- Kerb rail height between 75–150mm above finished floor level (in accordance with AS1428.1)
- Minimum 270° continuous gripping surface on round or elliptical handrails
- No sharp edges, open ends, or obstructions along the handrail path
- Corrosion-resistant finishes suitable for indoor and outdoor use, including coastal areas
- Fall prevention infill options (balusters or wires) to suit application-specific risk levels
- Structural load compliance to meet or exceed 0.5kN/m for handrails and 0.6–1.5kN/m for barrier sections, depending on use class
Bright Balustrading’s disability ramp handrails are built to support safe, independent access in compliance with Australian Standards, the NCC, and NDIS Home Modification requirements. Whether for a public hospital ramp, a school entrance, or a private residence under the NDIS, we provide tailored, certified solutions that balance functionality, compliance, and durability.
